Re: [BCAB] FW: Plextalk Pocket Network issues primarily solved! David Griffith 01 Aug 2011 10:59 BST

I do not know if you have view file types on in Windows. It may help to do
this. The radio files which the Plextalk will work with will be suffixed
with file types such as asp or pls or mcu etc.
Just to be clear you do not work with any url addresses as such.
To give an example. I used the radio feeds website to identify the stream
for BBC Radio London.
When I selected saved target as this downloaded a file in my downloads
folder called lrlondon.asx.

If left unedited this file will still work fine , as it is, on the
Plextalk, but
I simply renamed this file to BBC Radio london.asx as it is easier to
recognize this station name when the Plextalk reads this filename out in the
station list.
Hope that helps.

Hi David

I have been trying your suggestion of transferring web radio stations to the
Plextalk. Following your instructions, I find the station and its
associated code, bring up the insert F7 key and tab once to the Move to Link
button, and activate it. Then bring up the context menu and save as target.
But this is where I start to go wrong. I copy and paste into the Plextalk
web radio folder. I give it a sensible name, but I'm confused what to put
in at the URL edit box.

Clearly I'm missing something in this chain, and if you would prefer to take
this off list to avoid clutter, then I would appreciate any help. I would
just like to be able to get it going, even though I don't plan for it to be
the main source of use for the Pocket. I hate being beaten, and this is
definitely bugging me now! (smile).

Many thanks David.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

I guess a workaround is to simply insert the SD card to the PC?

Hi David

I installed the transfer tool which was absolutely fine. But when I plugged
in my Plextalk, it didn't recognise it at all. I have a Windows 7 32 bit
laptop, so did it on there and it worked beautifully.

I would think the Plextor people are aware of it?

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Thanks for the warning.
I was going to install windows 7 64 bit when I buy my I-Mac for use with
boot camp and VM fusion.

Is it possible to run a 64 bit version of Windows in 32 bit mode for these
device compatibility problems or did you simply plug your Plextalk into
another PC?

Hi Peter

Just to add to my below Email, the tool for the Pocket installed on Windows
7 64 bit, but the Pocket itself wasn't recognised. On Windows 7 32 bit,
however, it worked like a dream, so thought you or anyone else giving this a
go might like to be aware of it.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Many thanks as ever Peter. We are making progress. My primary function is
to have the Pocket as a good recorder for lectures, but we may as well make
good use of its additional features such as podcasts and web radio too.
Martin is already drowning in audio book players, but of course it has all
those facilities as well.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Jackie,

Here's one way to subscribe to podcasts with the Pocket:

First find the address of the podcast feed. To do this, find the link which
is usually called "subscribe", then right-click it and choose "copy
shortcut". This puts the feed address into your clipboard. Now connect the
Pocket and launch the plextalk transfer software. Tab to "content type",
and choose "podcast feed manager." Now go to the file menu and choose "add
podcast feed." this opens a dialogue where you can paste the feed address
from the clipboard, tab to ok and press enter. That should add the new
subscription ready to get the list of episodes with the Pocket.

As with radio stations it's a little fiddly but well worth it for the nice
easy way you can then manage and listen to podcasts.

As for mics, there's a huge choice, but if you want a good quality stereo
mic then look at the Sony range and pick your price-point.

If you need any further details feel free to Email off-list.

HTH,

Peter

Thanks humbly to Wally Harding, we now seem to be up and running with the
radio stations on the Plextalk Pocket thanks to his help with the network
settings. We hadn't gone far wrong, just had to alter something to do with
security, and that was it.

Thanks for all advice, but especially to Wally. Now we have to get the
podcast part of it going, and I'm looking for a good but small external
microphone for it if anybody has suggestions please?

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns
