Once you've pressed Control + O to get the Open dialogue in Word, press
Shift + Tab and then Spacebar to change the order of the list.

Thanks for this Richard but I'm afraid that the folder appears in one order
when viewed in Windows Explorer and another one when viewed in Word so this
doesn't solve my initial query, cheers.

Alan, In Windows 7, while in a list, press alt v for view, then cursor down
to sort by and look at the items in that sub-menu.
