i Susan and all,

here are my points:

1. RNIB butted out of the Audio-description movie issue when they disbanded
the broadcast support team.
2. Many of the audio-description tracks available on RNIB videos were not
ported through to the mainstream DVD when the new format replaced the old.
3. You often have to read the very small print on a cover of a
commercially-available DVD of a film to find out whether it has
audio-description. This is not an ideal situation, because it unwittingly
works to the Les Barker-style principle: "If you can read it, you don't need
it."
4. It is still often the case that a title, either film or TV series, for
which AD has been done for the broadcast, has no A D available when you buy
the commercially-available item. There are relativly few DVD's with audio
suitable for children available to buy, which could exclude blind kids from
the shared experience of watching a home video together.
5. Some blind people have tried to get a compromise by putting up sites for
sharing audio soundtracks of films/tv series plus a D, and run into
difficulties with copyright. Whatever happened to the Blidn Mice Movie
Vault, and who in their right minds could possibly consider it to be a real
threat to the level of sales of the actual movie with pictures to have
sound-only for people who cannot follow the bought item?
6. As has been pointed out already, you need sighted help every time you
want to hear an audio-described track on a purchased DVD, which must be
soul-destroying for any blind person into TV and movies who lives in a
household where there is no-one with reading vision.

Perhaps we need to raise awareness of the industry that we hare having to
put up with a level of service that the Deaf community would never have
tolerated, so, loads of subtitles, considerably less audio description.

I am tempted to write to any actor and any agency still in my address when I
was compiling Guide Cats, asking them if they would press film-makers and TV
to do all they can to ensure DVDs of their work
are issued with Audio description. I don't know how we would crack the
problem of DVD players with spoken menues unless we could get a company
interested in making them. Would COBOLT be too 'special' and clunky and
expensive? The ideal is to have speech menus incorporated into mainstream
sets.

Best,
Clive
