Hi Alan et al, If you are going to go with British Gas Remote Heating Control, make sure your new boiler has high voltage thermostat connections. I was going to have it installed here but, according to the engineer who came out to do the work, my boiler wasn't compatible; apparently the unit draws power from the boiler rather than having a separate power supply and my boiler wasn't able to accommodate. It's an Ariston, if that helps, and when I asked about the likelihood of a Worcester yielding better results (since that's the only other make with which I'm familiar) he said it would be able to handle it with no problems. On a side note, he also mentioned that if I was seriously considering investing in a Worcester (which I wasn't, incidentally) to hold off: apparently they are currently working on linking Worcesters to wi-fi networks directly so we can log in and check status LEDs and such like. There might also be an automatic maintenance request system in place when they eventually get rolled out. Unfortunately no ETA, but something to note. As for whether their existing system is accessible, I'm not sure. What little I saw of the iOS app prior to installation looked OK, a bit fiddly in places due to small icons and such but manageable once you figured it out. However, according to the saleswoman, there was also the option of controlling it via a website or, if all else failed, by SMS, so I'm sure there'd be something in there that would do the trick! All the best, Matthew -----Original Message----- From: Bcab [mailto:bcab-bounces@lists.bcab.org.uk] On Behalf Of Alan Booth Sent: 15 December 2012 17:31 To: 'BCAB Discussion List' Subject: Re: [BCAB] Smart phone that can control your central heating? Hi Chris I'm still doing my researches and haven't had definitive proof yet. But with an Android phone my daughter can see the settings on her boiler from her phone. She can download a text to speech app to access the information on her phone. Unfortunately, her boiler isn't set up for Wi-Fi so she can't change the settings via her phone. I've asked my son to check out his boiler in his flat to see if he can access it with his IPhone and I'm waiting to hear back from him. My understanding from the estimate I've had from British Gas is that you can get a remote thermostat control which is Wi-Fi and can be controlled from a smart phone ... now I want to see it working before I commit. I've got another boiler installer coming next week and I'll quiz him about it and let you know the outcome. Alan, I am in a similar situation to you. I am having a lot of work done on my house which includes a new boiler. Thanks to Peter Bosher I found a company called Heat Miser which sell a controller that can be controlled by an IOS App. This looked promising and when I contacted them one of their technical support people tested the App with Voiceover. However, although you can read all the settings you cannot change them. This was disappointing so, if you find anything else please do let us know. Hi Listers I'm looking to replace my combi boiler in the new year and have discovered that you can now have a remote thermostat which can be controlled by a mobile phone (for mobile phone read Smart phone!). Is anyone on the list using such a device and, if so, with what success and which phone?
