Hi,

How annoying. I read everyone's comments on the app, and to be fair I agreed with Graham for the majority of the views, especially when I purchased the app to try it and there was a distinct lack of menus. However, for my experience at least, most of the menus I need to access for restaurants are scanned images on the website or in PDF, and are totally unreadable unless I put them through an OCR package, which in most cases can do a semi accurate job, but if the dishes are foreign etc., it is quite useless. I was very impressed with the way that these menus were added to the site within a few days, and I now have full access to them through the app.

The list feature is also good because you can put items you saw previously in a list, then come back to them later. Handy if you are looking at stuff beforehand and then want to memorise them for when you get to the venue.

There is a site for restaurant owners to add their venues to the system, but in all reality I don't think this will happen much at the present time. I do think the app is quite expensive, though if you think about it you are effectively paying for someone to transcribe the menus into a readable format for you, if you used the services of a transcribe etc. you would probably pay a similar amount for the time it takes to get the information out of the menu.

Just my thoughts.
Andrew.

I've just seen a tweet from Guide which suggests that the £4.99 is a Christmas offer.

Hi,

I got it last week - costed a tenner then!

Yes the menus are added very quickly, I asked for a menu to be added and it was done over the weekend!

Andrew.

News reached me via a tweet from Easychirp this morning of a new app for IOS devices. Once installed it uses GPS to establish your current location and then offers you a number of restaurants available in the vicinity You can then access the menus of each of the offered venues, reading them item by item using VO. Double tapping each menu item brings up the description of the dish. If the restaurant you're planning to visit does not appear on the offered list, you have the option of requesting it to be added. This is done via an email form. The developers claim that requested restaurants can be added within 48 hours provided that a menu is available via the internet. I've already requested the addition of a restaurant the team and I are visiting on thursday. The app is called Guide (which is slightly confusing) but can be searched for in the app store using the string Guide talking menus. It costs a fiver and I wish I'd known about it last week when I was up in Salford. It seems to be very easy to use and is accessibly laid out and presented.
