Andrew, From memory, Humbug comes as a self extracting install. Once "installed", you then run the executable. This causes a DOS type box to open. When it opens, the game is running within, and all commands can be typed in to it. If you route JAWS to PC and then move up, you can read the content of the box. All new text written to the screen from within the DOS box is also read by JAWS, at least on my system (Win XP with JFW v12). So there is a bit of JAWS cursor work, but I found it manageable. Hope that answers your question. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: Bcab [mailto:bcab-bounces@lists.bcab.org.uk] On Behalf Of Agent Orange Sent: 29 December 2012 23:16 To: 'BCAB Discussion List' Subject: Re: [BCAB] Text adventures Yes you can play Zork and other zcode text adventure games using an interpreter called Win Frotz. This uses SAPI voices to voice up text displayed to the screen within the interpreter. Plus there's a copy to clipboard function within Win Frotz which enables you to review all the text produced within your game session using your native screen reader. You can get details and download links from the Audio Games dot net website. I played it myself only a couple of months ago this way. As others have already said, there is a rich world of text adventure games out there including both the originals from the 1980s, plus much more recent ones. Two of my favourites include Worlds Apart and Humbug (these do not use Win Frotz though). I'm glad wintads works well though. I remember writing some games for it when it ran under dos, extremely versatile. Best, David. -----Original Message----- From: Bcab [mailto:bcab-bounces@lists.bcab.org.uk] On Behalf Of Léonie Watson Sent: 29 December 2012 22:56 To: 'Ibrahim Gucukoglu'; 'BCAB Discussion List' Subject: Re: [BCAB] Text adventures Thanks Tiddy, Ibrahim and David. I've just spent a very enjoyable afternoon playing a WinTads game called Babel, and have several others lined up to try. Ibrahim, I had no idea people still made text adventures and/or interactive fiction. I may well take you up on your kind offer of help offlist if I run out of steam with the WinTads games. Thanks again. Léonie. -----Original Message----- From: Ibrahim Gucukoglu [mailto:ibrahim_gucukoglu@sent.com] Sent: 29 December 2012 18:19 To: tink@tink.co.uk; BCAB Discussion List Subject: Re: [BCAB] Text adventures Hi Leonie. Ah, text adventures, my forte. When you say back in the day, do you mean the classics from the likes of Infocom or do you mean the modern IF community created games? It would probably be a better idea if you reply to me off list as I don't know whether the BCAB list is meant for discussing games, accessible or otherwise. All the best, Ibrahim. -----Original Message----- From: Léonie Watson Sent: Saturday, December 29, 2012 2:59 PM To: bcab@lists.bcab.org.uk Subject: [BCAB] Text adventures Good afternoon, I'd like to play some of the old text adventure style games from back in the day. If anyone can point me in the direction of a good resource and/or useful information for screen reader users, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
