Hi,

It won't run on 64-bit systems, I knew there was some reason I couldn't play it. It runs under the Dosbox emulator, but of course that is no use with JFW etc.

Andrew.

Humbug comes as an exe, and you run it under dos. I used to play it with Vocal Eyes back in the day, but have not tried it with jaws in a dos box.

Best,

David.

Hi,

How did you get Humbug working with speech, since as you say you can't use an interpreter with this one?

Andrew.

Yes you can play Zork and other zcode text adventure games using an interpreter called Win Frotz. This uses SAPI voices to voice up text displayed to the screen within the interpreter. Plus there's a copy to clipboard function within Win Frotz which enables you to review all the text produced within your game session using your native screen reader. You can get details and download links from the Audio Games dot net website. I played it myself only a couple of months ago this way.

As others have already said, there is a rich world of text adventure games out there including both the originals from the 1980s, plus much more recent ones. Two of my favourites include Worlds Apart and Humbug (these do not use Win Frotz though).

Phil

I don't think you'll be able to play some of the gems like hitchhiker and the zork series. I'm glad wintads works well though. I remember writing some games for it when it ran under dos, extremely versatile.
Best,

David.

Thanks Tiddy, Ibrahim and David. I've just spent a very enjoyable afternoon playing a WinTads game called Babel, and have several others lined up to try.

Ibrahim, I had no idea people still made text adventures and/or interactive fiction. I may well take you up on your kind offer of help offlist if I run out of steam with the WinTads games.

Thanks again.

Léonie.

Hi Leonie.

Ah, text adventures, my forte. When you say back in the day, do you mean the classics from the likes of Infocom or do you mean the modern IF community created games? It would probably be a better idea if you reply to me off list as I don't know whether the BCAB list is meant for discussing games, accessible or otherwise.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Good afternoon,

I'd like to play some of the old text adventure style games from back in the day. If anyone can point me in the direction of a good resource and/or useful information for screen reader users, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Léonie.
